. The 578 firemen are organized into six divisions, each ofwhich is responsible for a section of the city. As Peking hasno general electrical fire alarm system, special watch towershave been erected, and from the tops of these guards are con-stantly on the lookout for fires. The fire-fighting equipmentconsists, for the most part, of old-style hand-operated enginesthat are able to throw only a small stream of water, but a highpower automobile fire truck has recently been purchased andis housed in one of the buildings near the Pei Hai or North Sea.Water is secured from the wells and also from the mains of thePeking Water China Company. Any one who has seen a fire in a Chinese city is not apt toforget it very soon. The fire department comes pulling itsengines by hand, and carrying flags in the day time or largelanterns at night. The men who are to carry water from thewells hurriedly put on the coats of the fire department, so theywill be allowed inside the lines that are quickly established by
