Question by Vodka Kick: Does China suffer from illiteracy?
There are 1+ billion Chinese and lots of them live in extreme poverty. Chinese language (Cantonese, Mandarin whatever) has thousands of signs. Whereas the Latin alphabet only has 26.

So how bad is illiteracy in China? Am I right that mostly only city people know how to read?

Probably quite a bit. My grandmother is from the Chinese ghetto/rural area and hardly knows how to read. She never went to school. My mom, on the other hand, did go to school, and knows how to read.

So the question is how many went to school and how many didn’t?

I personally studied Chinese as a kid, but I live in America… use it or lose it. I lost most of it. It is a difficult language to learn because of all the words which have to be memorized. With English, you can still at least figure out how to pronounce a word you’ve never seen before from the spelling, but with Chinese, you either know it or you don’t, unless there are pin yin written next to the words.
