Much more than 3 decades ago, Jon Wiant was subpoenaed by former North Carolina Senator Sam Ervin. Standing just before a room of university students, Wiant recalled the query that the longtime senator asked him: “Son, what morning did you get up and say, ‘today is the day that I feel I’ll set aside the Constitution?’”
It was a question that was hard for Wiant to answer, but one that started his reflection on the partnership among safety and the constitution.
Less than a week right after President Barack Obama delivered his initial major speech on electronic surveillance and placed new restrictions on the National Safety Agency’s access to domestic phone records, Wiant, a former Foreign Service Officer and an intelligence specialist, brought the conversation on information gathering and national safety to Florida State University on Thursday.
Wiant, who at present serves as an adjunct professor at George Washington University, mentioned there is fine line between collecting information essential for national safety and violating constitutional rights to privacy and prohibitions of unreasonable search and seizure.
